L&L Hawaiian BBQ

Gastronomy: Hawaiian BBQ

Specials: Spam Musubis and plain Malasadas- both at $0.99 for one each!

Spam musubis are a classic Hawaiian snack, consisting of a bed of rice, teriyaki sauce, grilled Spam on top, and wrapped in seaweed- kind of like sushi. It’s a great example of the resourcefulness of Hawaiian food- using Spam as a shelf stable meat, and also using the Spam can to mold the rice shape.

Malasadas are Hawaiian donuts, fluffy, yeasty, and coated in sugar or cinnamon sugar.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

We are proud to serve the only authentic Hawaiian food in Waco! L&L Hawaiian BBQ- Waco is not only owned by a Islander/Asian couple, but it’s also part of a franchise based on Honolulu with over 200 locations. We, Jonny & Lucy the owners of L&L Hawaiian BBQ Waco, ate at L&Ls in Hawaii and California for years, and always talked about opening one. We jumped at the opportunity to come back to TX where we both grew up and re-open L&L Waco in 2022 (after it struggled during COVID under the previous owners).

We’ve enjoyed every moment so far of sharing authentic Hawaiian dishes to the Central TX community. Jonny manages everything in the kitchen. He’s always had a passion for food, and he’s also experienced in Hawaiian/Islander cuisine, since he is Chamorro (ethnically from Guam) and grew up in Hawaii. He’s been cooking the dishes that L&L serves since he was young, when he would often help his mom and grandma cook for parties.

Lucy manages the front of the house. She worked as a barista/cashier/server for years, so her strength is customer service. She enjoys chatting with regular customers about their last trip to Hawaii, showing the kids the Lilo & Stitch Funko Pops we have, and educating new customers about Hawaii. And of course, she enjoys making sure all our customers have the best meal and experience possible. We love to share the story behind Hawaiian food, about how it’s the original “Asian fusion”. Hawaii is a cultural melting pot, influenced by the indigenous Hawaiians & immigrants who came from all over Asia and beyond to work on the sugar cane plantations during the late 1800s.

At the end of the work day, each group would make the best dish from their culture with the ingredients they had and share it with the group. This is why you’ll see familiar dishes on our menu, like Japanese Katsu fried chicken and Korean Kalbi Shortribs.

But we also have uniquely Hawaiian dishes, like Loco Moco, Garlic Shrimp, and Spam Musubi. We offer a full menu of chicken, beef, pork, and seafood options, and we have a range of meal sizes like kids, lunch bowls, or shareable plates.
